Pay named top reason for switching jobsOffice staff in London who are seeking a new position may be doing so as they believe they can earn more money working for another company.

According to research conducted by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), pay is the top reason for moving jobs for 54 per cent of respondents.

Some 2,000 people were polled by the organisation and 42 per cent said they would look for another position in order to be more happy at work.

This signals a shift from last year, when 48 per cent wanted more pay and 61 per cent were searching for job satisfaction.

Ben Willmott, senior public policy adviser for the CIPD, said: "The survey shows the ongoing impact of the economic downturn in the workplace. Employees are feeling the squeeze as a result of pay freezes or low pay settlements."

This comes after data released by the Incomes Data Services found professionals working in the private sector received a median pay award of three per cent in the first quarter of the year.
