Office staff in London looking for roles in the private sector after leaving the public arena often harbour "unrealistic expectations" in terms of their job prospects. That is the view of Marcus Alexander, managing director of Appleby Associates, who feels that a lot of professionals approach the task of finding a fresh position with an unwarranted sense of over-confidence. Mr Alexander noted that many seem to think they will obtain a similar job in the private sector straight away, but warned this may not be the case as the industry continues its period of recovery in the wake of the global economic downturn. Recently, the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development revealed that the number one motivation for workers looking to switch jobs is the desire for higher pay and more professional benefits. And the Appleby Associates official noted this is an unsurprising trend, as the current financial situation dictates that many people are finding it tough to make ends meet. Posted by Daniel Frost
