Flexible working 'should be extended to all professionals' Employers with professionals fulfilling office jobs should be permitted to extend the right of flexible working to all members of staff.

That is the opinion of Mike Emmott, employee relations adviser at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), who has called on the government to make sure it sticks to plans to roll-out this practice by 2015 and resist pressure from some quarters to leave smaller firms out of these changes.

Mr Emmott was speaking following the publication of the Conservative-Liberal Democrat alliance's Modern Workplaces consultation and insisted that flexible working is beneficial to both individuals and companies.

He stated that extending the right to request it is "long overdue" in the UK and noted that any restrictions imposed on flexibility to only include carers and parents would be a "mistaken assumption" of its benefits.

Research conducted by the CIPD recently showed that many professionals are enduring pay freezes despite the rising cost of living in Britain.
