Research: Professionals retiring later Many experienced sales staff approaching retirement age have not yet decided when they will quit their office jobs for good, a new study has indicated.

According to research published yesterday (August 30th) by Baring Asset Management (BAM), some 36 per cent of all non-retired professionals in the UK are unaware of when they will finish work permanently, while ten per cent have no plans at all to stop operating.

In a clear sign that an increasing number of individuals are changing the way they approach their careers in the aftermath of the recession, the percentage of professionals planning to quit work at some point between the ages of 66 and 70 has doubled over the last 12 months.

Marino Valensise, chief investment officer at BAM, observed: "With increased longevity and people not saving enough, the working population of those aged 65 and over will inevitably continue to increase."

Under plans from the government, the default retirement age of 65 is set to be abolished later this year in order to give employees more choice and flexibility over when they stop working.
