Companies with office staff in London would be able to play a bigger role in driving the economic recovery if the government provided them with more help. That is according to the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), which has called on the Conservative-Liberal Democrat alliance to follow up on its promise to reduce the amount of red tape companies are facing in the aftermath of the global downturn. In a letter sent to chancellor George Osborne yesterday (September 26th), the leading business group urged the coalition to take "immediate and real action" on its pledges to cut regulation, as many firms are yet to benefit from these promises. John Longworth, director-general of the BCC, commented: "The government needs to be prepared to introduce a package of measures that will strengthen business confidence, allowing them to grow, invest, export and create jobs." Recently, the Financial Times quoted John Cridland of the Confederation of British Industry as saying there "couldn't be a worse time" for the government to implement its upcoming Agency Workers Regulations.
