All part-time office staff in London will benefit from the implementation of changes to the country's employment legislation, an expert has suggested. From this Saturday (October 1st), the government's Agency Workers Regulations (AWR) will come into effect, meaning employers will be legally obliged to offer temporary professionals the same rights as their permanent members of staff after a period of 12 weeks. Several leading figures in the business community - such as John Cridland, director-general of the Confederation of British Industry - have spoken out against these alterations. It has been said the AWR will simply add to the red tape already faced by managers, but Brendan Barber, general secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), has dismissed such claims. He believes they will instead end an era of discrimination. "These new rights for agency workers are an important step forward in helping the UK's hundreds of thousands of agency temps get a fairer deal at work," the TUC official added. Posted by Daniel Frost
