Admin staff and others may have noticed a rise in employment tribunals during recent years, which has been described by one expert as "dramatic".Phil Flaxton, chief executive of Work Wise UK explains this trend has occurred during the past three or four years, with an increasing number of people opting to take their company to a tribunal. He suggests: "There has always been a small element of society who will look to abuse the system either for financial gain or of course to settle a grudge against a former employer or an existing employer." With this in mind, Mr Flaxton says it could be time to review the whole process, given that the rise in cases has been so notable in recent times. The default retirement age was recently abolished and Michelle Mitchell, director of charity at Age UK, suggested this could be an important step in ending inequality in the business sector.
