Smaller businesses with office staff in London need financial support more than ever following the publication of new unemployment data. That is if comments made by David Kern, chief economist at the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) are anything to go by, as he labelled the figures relating to jobs across the country "concerning". Yesterday (October 12th), the Office for National Statistics revealed that unemployment rose by 114,000 people throughout the quarter leading up to August of this year, while employment dipped by 178,000. And while Mr Kern noted this was "not surprising" due to the ongoing fragility of the UK economy, he insisted that the Conservative-Liberal Democrat alliance can still take measures to help rectify the situation. The expert urged the administration to use these numbers as an incentive to "boost the private sector's ability to create jobs". "Cutting red tape and enabling people to acquire the skills they need for employment will help businesses increase their workforces," Mr Kern added. Posted by James Strang
