Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with experienced admin staff are still finding it tough to access the necessary funding they need to grow following the economic slump. That is the view of Phil McCabe, spokesman for the Forum of Private Business (FPB), who feels the managers of such organisations are not finding it easy to gain money from reluctant banks and building societies. Mr McCabe went on to rue the fact that when cash is made available to companies, it usually proves "restrictively expensive" as there is a significant knowledge gap when it comes to how financiers choose to engage risk with business lending. "We've seen over-centralisation, an increasing lack of lending decision making powers, so local branch managers who know the businesses who are on their books and can gauge risk accurately," he added. Recently, Tim Leunig of the Centre Forum indicated that one way of improving this situation could be for the government to lend directly to businesses.
