Small business confidence on the wane, study shows Confidence among smaller companies with professionals fulfilling roles like finance jobs in London has fallen in recent times, new research has shown.

According to the Federation of Small Businesses' (FSB) latest Voice of Small Business Index, positive sentiment among mangers of such firms declined by 9.6 points from +0.3 to -9.3 throughout the third quarter of the year.

The body attributed this trend - which is traditionally a reliable predictor of the direction of the UK's gross domestic product - to factors like the pressure of rising costs and weakening demand from consumers.

Meanwhile, it was also found that an extension of the current National Insurance contribution holiday from the government would incentivise recruiting more staff to 11 per cent of all smaller organisations.

This comes after Phil McCabe, spokesman for the Forum of Private Business, stated recently that such businesses are still finding it tough to access the amount of finance they need following the recession.
