Job applicants 'must understand common courtesy'Individuals sending their CVs to London recruitment agencies would be wise to work on their interpersonal skills and manners in preparation for potential interviews.

According to Charlie Ryan, owner of therecruitmentqueen.com, many people lack such skills and tend to be poor with timekeeping.

She claims as much as 80 per cent of all the candidates she meets do not have good manners and are unaware of the importance behind good body language.

"That is what businesses are facing as a real challenge now," Ms Ryan notes.

The expert believes such skills could even prove to be more important than having the right qualifications, as they are assets that are difficult to teach.

Her comments follow a British Chambers of Commerce report entitled Skills for Business: More to Learn?, which noted many firms believe candidates lack the right attributes for a job.

This includes displaying poor levels of literacy and numeracy, along with timekeeping and communication problems.
