Report shows gender pension differences Female admin staff are unable to put as much money away in their pension plans as their male colleagues due to the ongoing issue of the gender pay gap.

That is according to new research published yesterday (November 1st) by Scottish Widows, which revealed that even though a growing number of women are now saving adequately for retirement, men are still able to stash around £700 more annually because of their higher pay packets.

Indeed, the study revealed that females put an average of 12.9 per cent of their salary into a pension plan - a figure slightly higher than the 12.6 per cent saved by the opposite sex.

However, because men generally earn around £28,000 per annum in comparison to the £22,400 taken home by women, this percentage is not reflected equally in retirement savings.

As of October 1st this year, the government abolished the default retirement age, meaning employers can no longer make someone finish work when they reach the age of 65.
