Workers 'face average annual commute of 200 hours'Professionals fulfilling roles such as finance jobs in London spend the equivalent of five weeks extra at work every year due to their commute.

According to research published yesterday (November 14th) by the Trades Union Congress (TUC) - a body with more than six million members - employees spend almost 200 hours travelling annually to and from their place of work.

Men were found to have an average commute time of 26 per cent greater than women - with males travelling for 219 hours per year and females on 174 hours - but those women who operate in the capital have lengthier journeys than men in all other regions.

Brendan Barber, general secretary of the TUC, noted these figures are a clear sign that employers should give their staff "greater access to flexible and high quality home-working".

"Unnecessary long commutes are frustrating and expensive for staff - and bad for business too," he added.
