IoD: Govt should postpone auto-enrolment Government plans to implement an auto-enrolment pension system in the UK next year should be postponed.

That is according to the Institute of Directors (IoD), which has urged the Conservative-Liberal Democrat alliance to alter its timetable as the country continues its recovery following the global economic downturn.

Under current proposals, companies with professionals in roles such as finance jobs in London will begin automatically listing staff members on pension schemes from next October.

However, the IoD - which has 43,000 members - feels this schedule should be delayed by two years, as, by this time, the nation should be in a better financial situation than it is at the moment.

Simon Walker, director general of the body, said "this is the wrong time" for such a big legislative change to be implemented as both "companies and households are hard-pressed".

"Real incomes are being squeezed and employers are struggling to offer staff pay rises," he added.
