Expert: Businesses should use LinkedIn Firms may wish to encourage their experienced admin staff to use LinkedIn as a way of promoting their business.

That is if comments made by Tiffany St James, founder of digital consultancy Stimulation, who believes social media now plays a vital role in the business world, as portals such as Facebook and Twitter continue to grow in popularity and importance.

However, Ms St James suggested that LinkedIn may be the best option of all for organisations as it represents a "much more professional environment" than its competitors.

"Employees of larger companies will be setting up their own groups and networks and things - it has cross-industry use of information," she added.

The expert went on to note the portal also provides workers and firms with a solid corporate presence.

Recently, Tim Gibbon of Elemental stated that when managed correctly, social media offers businesses the chance to improve their customer relations.

I am something of a slow-starter when it comes to social media and, if I'm being absolutely honest, rebelled against it for quite some time - I guess I'm a bit old-fashioned. But, I reaslied a good while ago that it was certainly going to form the future so gradually began to embrace it.

I'm still finding my way, but I do believe that if used responsibly, and with a certain degree of caution, it really is a fabulous marketing tool. Personally I have won business through Linked-In and am encouraged that particularly Twitter will ultimately reap benefits for me too. I have indeed been converted!
