Businesses such as London recruitment agencies should be sure they have the right person for the job before making any staff appointments. That is the advice offered by James Carmody of Reculver Solicitors, who has urged companies to do their homework thoroughly on prospective employees before offering them a position due to the current fragile economic situation. Mr Carmody explained that as well as the legal issues involved in doing so, the costs associated with recruiting poorly "can be large". "Employers would be wise to carefully assess the business case for taking on a member of staff," he noted. Recently, the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development's autumn Labour Market Outlook report indicated that British firms are scaling back on their employment opportunities at the moment. And Mr Carmody insisted that for those companies wishing to add to their workforce in the near future, it is important to avoid committing an "expensive mistake" by hiring an unsuitable applicant.
