Employers can boost staff motivation and increase their loyalty through salary sacrifice schemes, one expert has noted.According to Tara Daynes, an HR and training consultant and member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, these schemes are seen as a staff benefit that rewards their efforts. Salary sacrifice schemes work by employees swapping some of their income for perks such as childcare vouchers. In addition, there are financial advantages for both parties. Staff do not have to pay tax and National Insurance (NI) on their benefits and vouchers, while employers can also save with NI contributions. "It can help people to budget," Ms Daynes added, "as once the scheme is set up, they know exactly what they are receiving each month. All of that would certainly help during a recession." However, the expert added that these schemes can be time-consuming for admin staff carrying out the paperwork involved. Her comments come after Carole Spiers, chief executive of the Carole Spiers Group, said that looking after the workforce is vital if businesses are to survive in the current economic climate.
