Over 50s more inclined to switch off work emails

People in permanent recruitment in Central London and other cities are showing signs of reluctance to properly relax over the Christmas break by checking their work emails.

Full-time workers in their over 50s, however, are less likely to bow to peer pressure and are happy to switch off their smartphone or computer for a few days as they enjoy the festive season.

This is the finding of a survey by Securenvoy, seen by the BBC, which revealed that employees aged 18-24 years are more likely to read work emails during the holidays.

In total, 15 per cent of workers plan to check their emails frequently, while 31 per cent will read their correspondence occasionally.

Just over one-third of people said they will not check their emails at all.

Speaking to the BBC, Vanessa Robinson, head of HR practice development at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, said younger people are more "digitally connected" than their older peers and are also likely to be checking their Facebook at the same time.

Securenvoy suggested that email-checkers could be more concerned about job security and competing with their colleagues.
