Experienced admin staff face an increased amount of employee absence over the Christmas period from stress as well as overindulgence. David Liddle, director and founder of mediation and dispute resolution provider The TCM Group, urged companies to consider the stress employees might find themselves under during the festive period. He stressed that it will have a lasting effect on the overall wellbeing of staff and how the team functions throughout the forthcoming year, as stress often stems from relationship problems at work. A recent report from Bupa reveals that HR managers blame festive overindulgence for staff absence above any other reason for taking sick leave during December, with women and people under 30 years taking the most time off over the party season. Mr Liddle added that regarding longer-term sickness, HR professionals should work to understand why they are away. "Our advice to companies is to build stronger relationships, create the conditions for people to talk about their problems rather than relying on outdated grievance procedures," he said.
