 Small businesses could expand and hire more employees at London recruitment agencies if barriers were removed to online trading. According to the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), more firms could trade outside the UK if they had access to high speed broadband and has called on the government to ensure that there is no divide between rural and urban areas when it comes to broadband roll-out. It found that almost a quarter (22 per cent) of small businesses do not have access to 24Mbps broadband speeds in at least one of their sites, while a similar number only have access to speeds of up to 2Mbps, restricting their ability to trade online and grow. More research by the FSB revealed that 97 per cent of the small businesses that trade online do so in the UK, while four in ten trade in Europe. "Online trade has great potentials for small businesses but it still has its barriers. These must be removed," said John Walker, national chairman of the FSB. The government recently announced that it will allocate £100 million to create ten 'super connected cities' that will receive superfast broadband and set up a £20 million Rural Community Broadband Fund for hard-to-reach rural areas.
