 People working in senior finance jobs in London and other experienced roles have been found to show more knowledge of technology than their younger counterparts. According to the latest findings from a survey by Plusnet, people aged over 55 years knew the most about IT jargon than any other age range. Indeed, almost three-quarters (72 per cent) of older Britons were able to understand terms like bandwidth, Wi-Fi, router and download perfectly. By comparison, 39 per cent of people aged 16 to 24-years did not know what these terms actually meant. The survey also revealed that people aged over 55 are adept at sending emails, with 96 per cent of people saying they are confident with this, while 91 per cent are happy to go shopping online. One of the reasons for this could be because older generations recognise the importance of equipping themselves with new skills and adapting to rapidly changing ways of life. According to the broadband provider, 22 per cent of the people aged over 55 surveyed said they have taken lessons on how to use the internet, compared to just eight per cent of younger people. "Although youngsters have greater exposure to the internet through their communication habits and means of education, it is the older segment of the audience who are making the effort to get to grips with the net, and therefore learning more about how it all works," commented Jamie Ford, chief executive of Plusnet. Learning new skills could be vital to securing a new job over another candidate, particularly as employers increasingly demand IT proficiency from employees. It could also give candidates a better chance as that this week's employment figures show that unemployment has now risen to 2.64 million. However, London recruitment agencies have reported strong demand for candidates in high-skilled sectors including technology and engineering, the Recruitment and Employment Confederation stressed.
