Employers urged to develop relationship with staffEmployers have been advised to motivate their admin staff and other employees by developing a good relationship with them, particularly during the tough economic climate.

While businesses might not be able to give their staff a pay rise this year there are other ways to make employees feel appreciated.

Hilary Jeanes, leadership coach and human resources consultant at PurpleLine Consulting, advised employers to create a good working environment for staff by making sure that they have the right tools to do their job and ensure they have a sense of belonging to the company.

She said giving respect and recognition for an employee's achievements is important, as well as giving them the opportunity to grow.

"Check out what's important to [employees] about the way they do their job," she remarked. "Get to know your people [by] finding out what they enjoy doing and are good at … this helps to build rapport, trust and loyalty."

The expert also stressed the importance of giving relevant and specific feedback.

Businesses can also offer staff benefits like flexible working. The Recruitment and Employment Confederation has recently set up a Flexible Work Commission to help the government use flexible working to enhance productivity.
