Tax breaks on private medical insurance needed, say employersEmployers and HR professionals hiring staff from London recruitment agencies are in agreement that there should be tax breaks on private medical insurance.

More than half (55 per cent) of employers interviewed by Simply Health said that this would mean they can provide their entire staff with medical insurance.

Currently, 40 per cent of organisations in the UK offer employees private medical insurance, but 46 per cent of these only offer it to senior or middle management, the survey found.

Tax breaks could allow employers to offer the benefit to employees lower down in the company, while a recent review into sickness absence has also recommended tax relief for lower earners to help their return to work.

"With the NHS struggling to cope with restricted funding and with seemingly further cuts on the horizon, there is a real need for the government to encourage employers to take greater responsibility for employee health and wellbeing," stressed Howard Hughes, spokesperson for Simplyhealth.

"Tax relief on healthcare benefits such as private medical insurance is an effective way to help reduce the burden on the NHS and to help organisations to better manage sickness absence."
