Greater equality for agency workersAgency workers from London recruitment agencies and in other cities across the UK now have more rights after the Agency Workers Directive came into force.

Temporary employees working after 12 weeks in a job will receive basic rights like permanent staff, with holiday entitlement, sick pay, maternity leave and access to private healthcare benefits.

The move, which also comes two months after the Agency Workers Regulations first launched on October 1st, will affect 1.4 million people in the UK.

"Six years after the launch of the CWU's campaign, hundreds of thousands of agency workers across the UK can now finally look forward to some basic employment fairness," said Billy Hayes, general secretary of the Communication Workers Union (CWU).

"Not so very much to ask for, you would have thought, yet it's been a fight that has pitched the trade union movement against successive UK governments and commercial interests."

However, some groups such as the Forum of Private Business has suggested that the new rules will make it harder for some employers to hire temporary staff as it will become more costly and drive up work for HR staff.
