Research finds flaws in fit notesFit notes have been found to double the time that employees are likely to be absent from work, according to new research, increasing costs on businesses and adding paperwork onto experienced admin staff.

According to FirstCare, health professionals sign off workers for blocks of time, leading to employees with fit notes to take an average of 47.57 days off compared to 19.68 days among those without fit notes.

The purpose of fit notes was meant to reduce the length of long-term absence from work and FirstCare suggested that health professionals should consider phased returns to work and further guidance on how to manage employee workloads to accommodate their medical needs.

Research did show, however, that obtaining a fit note did not reduce the possibility of repeated absence due to long-term health issues.

"Fit notes are doing the opposite of what they were designed for, and because of their inflexibilities are causing employees to be off work for longer without reducing the likelihood of repeated absence," commented James Arquette, a director at the absence management specialist.
