Will pension auto-enrolment bring admin burdens?Admin staff in the UK could be facing additional paperwork later this year if the government goes ahead with plans to introduce auto-enrolment for workplace pensions.

Under the scheme, all employers will enrol workers into a workplace pension, in which they and their employees pay into. Workers will have to opt-out of the scheme if they do not want to take advantage of it.

It is expected that the scheme will run from October.

Robin Ellison, head of strategic development for pensions at Pinsent Masons, claimed that it will pose a "very high risk" for companies.

"Most employers aren't prepared for auto-enrolment, and even when auto-enrolment comes, it won't do the job of providing a decent pension for most of the workforce," he said.

"Contributions are too low, the rules are too complicated and nobody is quite sure if the systems work."

Instead, Mr Ellison said that employers should prepare for the scheme "holistically" and examine their overall pensions policy.

Auto-enrolment is designed to help more workers prepare for retirement before it is too late to save up enough money from their earnings.
