The UK jobs market has started 2012 being tough and resilient and is functioning well despite slight decline in placements. This is the conclusion of Kevin Green, chief executive of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC), who said that employers looking for workers from London recruitment agencies are acting cautiously and are "taking their time to make workforce decisions". Much of the reason for this, he said, was down to the wider economic outlook, most importantly the eurozone sovereign debt crisis. Once this is resolved, Mr Green remarked, employers will have economic visibility, improving their confidence and boosting the jobs market. The latest Report on Jobs from the REC and KPMG shows a modest decline in permanent staff placements. However, sectors that remained strong for jobs vacancies this month included engineering, IT and office professionals. Last month's JobsOutlook survey from the REC revealed that 71 per cent of employers plan to hire permanent workers this year. Posted by Mary King
