Workplace health and safety receives boost with BTECMore businesses could be encouraged to adopt the most up-to-date health and safety practices at work with the arrival of the UK's first BTEC-accredited course.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has launched a new Manual Handlers Training Course, which gives trainers a BTEC Level 3 accreditation.

Frances Richardson, director of operations at RoSPA, suggested that this will make the course more appealing to workers.

"Musculoskeletal disorders are the most commonly reported type of work-related ill health and this course helps organisations reduce the incidence by training staff to avoid back injuries through correct handling techniques," she explained.

"Preventing these injuries will bring benefits to organisations and reduce costs. Their designated manual handling trainer will then be able to pass their skills on to their colleagues and help reduce workplace injuries."

Her comments come after Karen Jackson, solicitor and managing partner at didlaw, urged employers to spot any mental health issues of their staff, as it can greatly affect their work.
