PA's in London and other office workers are wasting up to 21 days every year through general email misuse and overload, one expert has said.
Dr Monica Seeley, an expert on email management, founder of the Mesmo Consultancy Group and author of Brilliant Email, stressed the issue that employees do not have to answer every email immediately.
"Just because you've got a BlackBerry, doesn't mean you have to pick up your emails," she said, calling on managers to educate their staff to behave more sensibly around email.
Dr Seeley suggested that many people are "enthralled" with owning a smartphone and may reply to an email in haste, only to realise they could have written something they did not mean to.
"The other side is - in these times of austerity - there is no need to throw out the work-life balance, because in fact we need to be even more productive - and being more productive means we need to get some proper rest and refresh ourselves," she added.
Research by Dr Seeley shows that 25 per cent of workers now expect a response to an email within a hour, leading to errors and stress.
