In a move to find a permanent solution to the perennial problem of recruiting and losing valued temporary colleagues, ASDA is creating 10,000 new permanent positions for people looking to work as little as ten weeks of the year. The new “Seasonal Squad” recruits will be permanent ASDA colleagues but with a contract to work an annual, rather than weekly, number of hours. The jobs are designed to cover the busy times of the year like Christmas, Easter and the summer school holidays and will range from greeters to porters, checkout colleagues to warehouse workers. As well as guaranteed seasonal work, colleagues will also be able to take year-round advantage of ASDA’s award-winning benefits which include; a generous colleague discount card; one of Britain’s biggest share schemes; holiday pay and an annual performance-related bonus. ASDA is already recognised as Britain’s best company for flexibility and it believes that this new way of working will particularly appeal to those feeling disenfranchised by the current Monday to Friday, week-in, week-out way of working. ASDA also hopes the move will result in even more over 50’s applying to join the ASDA team. ASDA is Britain’s biggest employer of over 50’s but is keen to recruit more. Since the launch of its Goldies campaign to recruit more people aged 50 or over, ASDA has seen absence levels drop, customer service levels rise and labour turnover take a one per cent downturn. The benefits to ASDA are many and varied. Not only will it mean that capable and well-trained colleagues will not be lost from the business, but it will help ASDA make huge savings on costs – currently ASDA spends £3,500 a head recruitment costs. “We recognise that people are looking for flexibility across the working year, not just the working week.” said Caroline Massingham, ASDA retail people director, “If you‘re one of the many people that wants to balance long periods of leave with a fulfilling job, the options are limited. ASDA’s ‘Seasonal Squad’ provides a real alternative to those looking for truly flexible working packages.” |
